Director of Community Development, City of Escondido, CA


Just 18 miles from the Pacific Ocean, Escondido lies 30 miles northeast of San Diego and roughly 100 miles south of Los Angeles. This full-service city maintains a workforce of 970 FTEs and a FY 21-22 operating budget of $283.4 million. The Community Development Department is organized into four divisions and supported by 35 full-time positions and a FY 2021-22 budget of $7.9 million.

The incoming Director will help shape the future of Escondido and the department. The ideal candidate is a big-picture thinker with exceptional leadership and management skills coupled with familiarity with the development functions of a city. The city is seeking a manager who is comfortable with active community dialog, exhibits well-developed political acumen, and has the demonstrated ability to translate policy into action. A Bachelor’s degree and ten years of increasingly responsible experience in community development, planning, or public administration, including three years management/administrative responsibility, is required. Master’s degree highly desirable.
