Deputy Director – Special Initiatives (Planning and Economic Recovery)


The Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) is offering a fantastic opportunity to contribute towards building a sustainable, equitable, and resilient future for the Southern California region. The Deputy Director--Special Initiatives (Planning and Economic Recovery) is a 2-year limited term position (with full benefits) to support the SCAG in developing an economic recovery strategy rooted in addressing the region's housing crisis and the implementation of Connect SoCal, the region's long-range plan. As a newly constituted position with responsibilities that are urgent and critical in nature, the Deputy Director will quickly stand-up a program relying on a sound understanding of the region along with extensive professional experience in housing finance and planning in the public-sector. The position will be supported by a matrixed staff team and consultants working closely with SCAG's subregional partners and cities to deliver projects that accelerate housing production and create economic opportunity. The successful candidate will also support the Planning Director in leading special initiatives that relate more broadly to the pandemic and economic recovery as a member of the leadership team within the Planning Division.

This position requires a Bachelor’s degree and 9 years of increasingly responsible professional experience in a municipal or private planning organization with experience in program and/or policy development and implementation in relation to housing planning and finance, transit planning, transit-oriented development, and economic development strategies, including five years management experience, preferably in a matrix structure. A Master’s degree is strongly preferred.

The annual salary range for this position is $187,054 to $243,152 and will be based on qualifications and experience. SCAG offers a competitive benefits program including CalPERS retirement.
